The magazine cover shoot ranks right up there with advertising photography on the importance (i.e.- intense, pressure filled) scale. Clients in both genres have high expectations because a lot rides on the outcome. Advertisers want the images to drive sales. Magazine editors and publishers want the cover image to stand out above the surrounding competition (on a newsstand–the few that are left, or in the doctor’s office waiting room). They want that image to compel readers to pick up their magazine and read it!

I’ve been successfully creating eye-catching cover photographs for decades and believe this one for Colorado AvidGolfer is no exception. When possible it’s good to scout a location beforehand. This gives me a “feel” for the space. I look at backgrounds, observe the existing light, think about all of the “problems” that could arise and file this in back corner of my brain.

Early arrival on the shoot day goes without saying so lights & camera can be set up, location staging arranged. As you can imagine, most magazine cover subjects are executive category folks, busy, tight schedules, often accompanied by staff and “handlers”. Often a photographer only gets a few minutes to complete the session. My record shortness of time was 1 minute 30 seconds to photography actor Larry Hagman on the TV set of the original Dallas show.

George Solich, the new Chairman and President of Castle Pines Golf Club, was more generous with his time. We created this cover image, broke that set down, re-set lights while he changed wardrobe, and then photographed the more relaxed candid image while he was seated on a sofa. The third and unplanned photograph was taken between the first and second ones. Thanks to Editorial Director Jon Rizzi for not only using that photograph but also my write-up about it on the last page of the magazine, “Blind Shot”.

ABOUT My blog

I'm working hard this year to overcome my love / hate relationship with blogging. Over the years, I've looked at is as a difficult chore, a task that should be done on a regular basis.

Guess what? Not many posts produced.

Changing up my attitude in late 2022. Will post because I have stories to share. When writing about the amazing adventures and experiences from "back in the day", it's fun and often enlightening to relive those memories.

Posting about present day events and photo subjects allows for "real time' sharing of experiences.
